Your 11-digit ABN must be clearly stated
The words "Tax Invoice"
Must appear on the document
Date issued

OR a statement that the price includes GST (only if total ≤ $1,000)
Price of the supply
Ex-GST and GST-inclusive amounts

What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a 10% tax on most goods and services sold in Australia. Businesses registered for GST must charge GST on taxable sales and can claim GST credits on business purchases.
Do I need to register?
You must register for GST if your turnover is $75,000 or more per year ($150,000 for non-profits). You can voluntarily register below this threshold. Ride-share and taxi drivers must register regardless of turnover.
GST-free items
Some goods and services are GST-free: basic food, medical services, educational courses, childcare, and most exported goods. Always check the ATO's current list for your specific product or service.
The formulas
Add GST:
Price × 1.1 = inc-GST
Price × 0.1 = GST amount
Remove GST:
Price ÷ 1.1 = ex-GST
Price − (Price÷1.1) = GST

How to add GST in Australia
To add 10% GST to a price, multiply it by 1.1. For example, a $500 service becomes $550 inc-GST, with $50 being the GST component. When issuing a tax invoice, you must show the GST amount separately or state that the price includes GST.
How to remove GST from a price
To find the pre-GST amount from a GST-inclusive price, divide by 1.1. The GST component is the difference: inc-GST minus ex-GST. Never divide by 0.9 — this gives the wrong answer. Our calculator uses the correct formula automatically.
